Eurodesk Young Journalists

Eurodesk Ireland is very proud to announce that TWO of our Youth Ambassadors, Harry McCann and Aleesha Wiegandt, are part of the European Pool of Young Journalists along with ten other young journalists, aged 16 to 27, from five European countries. Their task is to reflect young people's opinions on relevant topics in journalistic pieces to be featured on the European Year of Youth 2022 page. They explore different formats - i.e. articles, interviews, videos, podcasts - to make their voice heard and enhance their professional skills.

European Year of Youth 2022

Eurodesk Ireland is delighted to celebrate 2022 as the European Year of Youth (EYY). It highlights the role of European Youth to build a better future: greener, more inclusive, and digital. It brings plenty of opportunities to learn, share your vision, meet people and engage in activities all over Europe.

Eurodesk Ireland supported many of the activities throughout the year including the EYY, welcoming event 'Connect with Europe' on 22 March in Dublin, and Léargas's special All Aboard train events in May and September.

NATIONAL EURODESK HIGHLIGHT

 Eurodesk Youth Ambassadors Panel

In 2019, Eurodesk Ireland launched its first Youth Ambassadors Panel - a group of young people (18-25) from Ireland who either had taken part in EU programmes or are young activists. These highly skilled and talented young people spread the word to their peers about many European opportunities and EU-funded programmes for young people. They also support
and participate in European events and consultations to voice young people's concerns and needs.

In 2023, we will be launching a new call for Eurodesk Youth Ambassadors to provide more young people from Ireland with Eurodesk training and EU participation opportunities. Watch this space!

MULTIPLIER SPOTLIGHT

Eurodesk Ireland works with 29 local information partners (multipliers) around the country, inform young people about mobility opportunities and encourage them to become active citizens. Here we introduce two of our wonderful colleagues from Co. Donegal...

Kasia Kurzeja

Donegal Youth Service

Q. How long have you been a Eurodesk multiplier?

I have been a Eurodesk multiplier since 2016.

Q. What three words would you use to describe your role?
A. First-to-ask person; European stuff; entertaining.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Dynamic environment, working with young people and networking with Eurodesk family!

Q. What are your biggest professional challenges?

Probably the cultural differences and different approach to basic things, such as punctuality or amount of emails sent regarding the same matter. Every time, I learn something new about myself and people I work with.

Q. What do you like most being a member of Eurodesk?
I love the professional trips around Europe and an opportunity to expand my professional horizons when taking part in the variety of training/webinars and seminars.

Q. How would you describe Eurodesk to a child?

It is a place where magic happens - you meet people from different countries, exchange practices and cultures, receive great support from the network and use your own knowledge to help other people.

Q. Name a programme or resource that has worked well to raise awareness of European Opportunities

One of the Donegal Youth Services’ famous Time to Move events - We created here an airport, delivering the real-life experience to disadvantaged young people: check-in (maybe the only one in their life so far?), duty-free shop (explaining the importance of EU free market), and 4 gates where they could get information on studying, volunteering or working abroad, or simply chat with one of the ESC volunteers. It was an extremely successful event, widely recognised within the Eurodesk network across Europe.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Eurodesk multiplier?

A. Be ready for hard, rewarding work, extraordinary network meetings, constant jokes about no trains in Donegal, but first of all, supportive and welcoming environment.

Q. What is your motto or personal mantra?

'Lower your expectations, keep your standards high'

Kevin McCaul

Europedirect Letterkenny

Q. How long have you been a Eurodesk multiplier?

I have only started working as a Eurodesk multiplier in 2022 but Europe Direct Letterkenny has been promoting the work of the EU and Eurodesk since 2007.

Q. What three words would you use to describe your role?
A. Proactive approach; attention to detail; felixible

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The ongoing learning and promotion of all the resources and opportunities available throughout the EU. Here at ED Letterkenny we receive regular queries via the phone, email and in person. The war in Ukraine and the energy crisis are the two most popular topics for discussion.

Q. What are your biggest professional challenges?

Answering complaints from members of the public who are not always fully informed on the workings of the EU.

Q. What do you like most being a member of Eurodesk?
Working with other agencies and organisations who are also involved in promoting opportunitites available throughout the EU. For example, we will be working with our colleagues at the Donegal Youth Service for our event for the Time to Move campaign this October.

Q. How would you describe Eurodesk to a child?

A supportive network of well-informed and trained EU advocates who can improve their quality of life with exciting programmes via Discover EU.

Q. Name a programme or resource that has worked well to raise awareness of European Opportunities

ED Letterkenny holds up to five events per year to showcase the policies of the EU. Events relating to the European Green Deal seem to encourage engagement, as everyone has an obligation to preserve the planet for future generations.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Eurodesk multiplier?

A. To engage with stakeholders and fellow multipliers. As someone new to Europe Direct, I took great support from ED and Eurodesk colleagues when I first began working on the project. This support is a comfort and reassures me that help is only a phone call away!.

Q. What is your motto or personal mantra?

'Try your best but be realistic about what one can do on their own'
'Two heads work better than one!'

Winners of Eurodesk Awards 2022:

Every year, the Eurodesk Awards celebrates the work of Eurodesk's local multipliers, who are helping young people discover and seize the numerous opportunities that Europe has to offer.
In 2022, 31 projects from 12 countries competed for 4 prizes.

The first winner, identified as the ‘Most Empowering Information Project’, was ‘N.E.O.N.’ - Not Excluded from Our Neighborhood. This project was funded by the European Solidarity Corps. The project aimed to intervene in a city suburb (called District 5) to improve social inclusion and the use of urban spaces.

The youth information worker profession
recognised by ESCO

Eurodesk and ERYICA (the European Youth Information and Counselling Agency) have been advocating for a greater recognition of the Youth Information sector.

The first step taken together with ERYICA led us to create a European Competence Framework for Youth Information Workers (#YouthInfoComp).

The next step in the recognition of the sector has come from the inclusion of the 'youth information worker' in ESCO, the EU multilingual classification of European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations in January 2022.

Joint best practice booklet released by EYCA, ERYICA and Eurodesk

As a result of the collaboration between ERYICA, EYCA and Eurodesk, the three networks published the 'Engage. Inform. Empower' joint best practice booklet. The publication is a collection of good practice from the main European youth information and mobility networks.

The booklet is divided into four different categories: studying and employment; mobility and integration; digital tools and peer-to-peer and face-to-face. These themes lead the reader to almost 30 good practices all around Europe.
