Volunteering & Child Protection Policy

Every year we see an increasing number of international volunteer projects, including those working with children, for example in children's homes, kindergartens or schools. How can we avoid that volunteers continue to be placed in situations that may prove harmful to children?

NATIONAL EURODESK HIGHLIGHT

Peer-to-peer meetings empower young refugees

This spring Eurodesk Iceland organised a workshop on racism and prejudice for peer-to-peer youth workers aged 17-20 who had organised a Solidarity Project which consisted of meeting up with young refugees in Iceland. The project's goal was to introduce the young refugees to Icelandic youth culture. The workshop fostered some good discussions and helped the peer-to-peer youth workers get a better understanding of the situation of the young refugees and the problems they might face in society.

During the solidarity project the peer-to-peer group met with a group of young refugees aged 14-20 from Syria, Venezuela, Iraq and Afghanistan. They traveled together to different parts of the city for activities favoured by local Icelandic youth. They also had fruitful dialogues on what it is like to be a young person today, shared their experiences and learnt from each other. The project was well received by local authorities and the peer-to-peer group is hoping to expand it next year, accommodating the influx of refugees from Ukraine.
